HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The UAH softball team dropped a narrow 7-6 decision to Trevecca on Saturday afternoon at Charger Park in Gulf South Conference action.
UAH moves to 31-17 overall (15-12 GSC play), while Trevecca Nazarene Trojans softball improves to 17-14 overall (13-14 GSC play).
UAH struck first in the second inning when Kylie Ballentine doubled down the left-field line to score Mia Brown and give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Trevecca responded in the third inning, tying the game on a fielder's choice RBI.
The Trojans took control in the fourth inning with three runs to build a 4-1 advantage. UAH answered in the bottom half of the inning as Ballentine singled to left to drive in another run and cut the deficit to 4-2. The Chargers chipped away again in the sixth inning, scoring on a passed ball to make it a one-run game at 4-3.
Trevecca extended its lead in the seventh inning with three runs, including a two-run home, pushing the score to 7-3. UAH mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs on an RBI groundout by Alexa Douthitt and a two-RBI single from Hannah Temple. The Chargers were unable to complete the comeback, falling 7-6.
UAH recorded nine hits in the contest, led by Mia Brown and Kylie Ballentine with two hits apiece. Ballentine drove in two runs, while Temple added two RBI. Douthitt also contributed an RBI, and Brown scored twice.
In the circle, Katie Bracken took the loss to fall to 12-8 on the season, allowing four runs over 3.2 innings with four strikeouts. Megan Shurtz pitched the final 3.1 innings, surrendering three runs while striking out four.
UAH will return to action with a Gulf South Conference road series at West Alabama Tigers softball in Livingston, Ala., on April 24-25. The Chargers will open the series on Friday at 4 p.m. before concluding with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
