HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The UAH softball team played a three-game Gulf South Conference series with West Alabama, dropping the opener 3-0, responding with an 11-5 victory in Game 2, and falling 3-0 in the series finale on Friday and Saturday.
UAH moves to 32-19 overall and 16-14 in GSC play, while West Alabama improves to 37-11-1 overall and 22-8 in conference play.
Game One: West Alabama 3, UAH 0
West Alabama struck for all of its offense in the middle innings, using a pair of home runs in the third and a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to take control of the opener.
UAH collected five hits but was unable to capitalize, leaving eight runners on base. Jill Cockrell and Kylee Smith each recorded two hits, while Kylie Ballentine added a hit of her own.
Megan Shurtz took the loss after allowing three runs over six innings, striking out eight.
Game Two: UAH 11, West Alabama 5
UAH jumped out to an early lead in Game 2, scoring two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Kylie Ballentine and an unearned run to take a 2-0 advantage. West Alabama added a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Chargers responded in the second when Alexa Douthitt launched a two-run home run to extend the lead to 4-1.
UAH continued to build momentum in the fourth inning, as Douthitt delivered an RBI double before Mia Brown and Kylee Smith each added RBI singles to push the lead to 7-1. The Chargers continued to add runs in the fifth inning when Douthitt struck again with a three-run home run, extending the advantage to 10-1. West Alabama mounted a response in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 10-4.
Game 2 was then halted due to weather and resumed the following day, picking back up in the top of the sixth inning.
When play resumed, UAH added an insurance run in the sixth inning as Gracie Ashley came around to score on a fielder's choice to make it 11-4. West Alabama added a run in the seventh, but the Chargers closed out the 11-5 victory.
Douthitt led the way offensively with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, including two home runs and six RBIs. Ballentine added four hits, while Brown recorded three hits and an RBI, and Brittany Slaten scored four runs.
Katie Bracken earned the win after pitching five innings, while Lydia West tossed the final two innings in relief to secure the victory.
Game Three: West Alabama 3, UAH 0
The rubber match remained scoreless through five innings before West Alabama broke through in the sixth with a pair of home runs to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
UAH managed just one hit in the game, which came on a single by Baylee Darby.
Katie Bracken took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over six innings, striking out nine in the effort.
UAH will shift its focus to its final Gulf South Conference regular season series, traveling to face Christian Brothers in a three-game set in Memphis, Tenn. The Chargers will open the series with a doubleheader on Thursday, April 30, beginning at 1 p.m., before closing out the series on Friday, May 1 at 12 p.m.
