MEMPHIS, Tennessee – In the first Gulf South Conference match of the season, the University of Alabama in Huntsville earned a 3-0 road win against Christian Brothers.
The Chargers (9-1, 1-0 GSC) kicked off the match with a quick 2-0 lead behind kills from Kayla Ward and Ella Schumacher, in what became the standard presence from the two as they led the team in kills for the match. That early lead quickly grew as UAH took a 13-6 lead before a timeout and shift for Christian Brothers (4-8, 0-1). The Buccaneers managed a six-point run to bring the score to a 13-12 UAH lead before the Chargers cut off the host team's attack. Despite the comeback efforts from CBU, the Chargers effectively closed out the set behind a six-kill effort from Schumacher while five UAH players earned kills to take Set 1, 25-20.
While CBU was able to answer the Chargers' opening point in Set 2, it was the last time the score came into contention as UAH took the next six points for a 7-1 lead. The Buccaneers cut the score as close as three points as UAH led 15-12, but the Chargers continued to build on their momentum to close out the set with a 25-16 win and a 2-0 overall lead. Seven Chargers earned kills in the set with Schumacher pacing the side with four while Ward, Emily Redman and Carlee Lowry each notched two while Cooper Garrett, Mary Grace Bundrant and Amelia Smith each scored one.
The third, and ultimately final, set saw a back-and-forth battle early on as UAH pulled ahead 9-6. However, the Buccaneers' sixth point proved to be their last for a while as the Chargers went on a 11-0 run to take a 20-6 lead. CBU earned a trio of points before the end of the match, but could not catch up to the UAH lead as the Chargers earned the match win on a 25-9 Set 3 win.

Junior Ella Schumacher led the Chargers with 13 kills on 25 attacks (.480 attack percentage). Kayla Ward, Carlee Lowry and Emily Redman followed up with nine, seven and six kills, respectively.

Cooper Garrett once again led the team in assists with 21 while Anna Clare Hutto added another 11 while the team notched 40 total assists in the match.

In addition to six kills, Emily Redman hit seven service aces in the three-set match while also leading the team in digs with 14.

Brooklyn Stiles added 11 digs while Garrett added another 10. As a team, UAH notched 60 total digs.

Ella Moore paced UAH in blocks with two total blocks while Ward, Schumacher and Garrett each scored a block.

UAH remains in Tennessee with a trip to Jackson on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match against Union as GSC play continues.
The Chargers' next home match will be on September 25 at 6 p.m. against Montevallo.
