Chargers Open UAH Invitational With Win Against Harding

The University of Alabama in Huntsville opened the UAH Invitational presented by Bojangles with a 3-0 win against Harding Thursday evening in Spragins Hall.

The Chargers (4-0) started off the first match of their home tournament in a lock for supremacy as neither UAH nor Harding (4-1) pulled apart until just about midway in the first set. UAH pushed ahead for the largest lead of the set at that point with a 10-6 advantage, courtesy an Emily Redman kill. From that point, UAH held its distance from Harding with as much as a six-point lead, 15-9. Though the Lady Bisons pushed back late in the set, UAH held off its opponents to secure a 25-20 Set 1 win. Mary Grace Bundrant and Emily Redman each notched four kills to lead a first set total with 19 kills for the host team.

The second set fell the way of the Blue and White early on with three straight points. Each side traded points through the bulk of the set, however, until UAH ripped off three straight points to take a 20-14 lead. Powered behind four kills from Cooper Garrett and a trio of Chargers, Bundrant, Kayla Ward and Ella Schumacher, with three kills, UAH secured a Set 2 win, 25-21.

In the third, and ultimately final, set the Chargers opened up with an early lead, again, and maintained their lead through the entirety of the set. Harding cut into the Chargers' lead multiple times as UAH held just a one-point lead six times, including 24-23. Garrett finished off the match with her fourth kill of the third set to take a 25-23 win.
