UAH Romps Past Delta State For Fourth Straight

Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – Remaining perfect in Gulf South Conference play, the UAH men's soccer team erased an early deficit and throttled Delta State on the road on Friday afternoon. The win moves the Chargers to 8-3-0 (3-0-0 GSC) on the season while DSU drops to 4-8-0 (0-1-0 GSC).

The four-game winning streak marks the longest for the Blue and White since September of the 2007 seasons.

The Statesmen struck quickly, putting one past UAH keeper Kel Markert in the seventh minute to produce a 1-0 advantage for the home side. The goal snapped what had been more than a two-game shutout streak for Markert.

The score remained that way until the Chargers evened things up late in the first half as Felix Hjalmarsson scored his seventh of the season in the 39th minute.

It was the Chargers that then produced an early score in the second half en route to taking complete control of the match.

Ragnar Gunnarson fed it to Hjalmarsson who headed it in for his second of the day in the 50th minute. Five minutes later, Kyle Simmons found Mitch Wilson who put it in the back of the net to quickly put the Chargers up 3-1 in the 56th minute.

The scoring would not end there as Simmons tallied his 10th of the season in the 70th minute to give the Blue and White its commanding 4-1 lead.

Both All-American candidates, Simmons and Hjalmarsson continue to sit atop the scoring ledger following the contest as Simmons has 23 points while Hjalmarsson has recorded 18 points.

In earning the win, Markert made four stops on the five shots he faced.

UAH outshot the hosts 17-13 on the day, including a 10-6 lead in shots on goal. It was a contentious affair as the teams combined for 29 fouls and four cautions.

Looking to continue its hot ways, the Chargers now travel to Memphis, Tenn., for a key showdown with Christian Brothers on Sunday. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
