HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Despite a strong comeback effort, the UAH women's soccer team fell to visiting North Alabama on Friday afternoon at Charger Field. The 2-1 decision snaps a five-game undefeated streak and moves the Lady Chargers to 5-8-2 (3-2-1 Gulf South Conference) on the season while UNA improves to 14-3 (5-1 GSC).
To make the GSC tournament, the Lady Chargers now need to either tie or defeat West Florida or have West Georgia tie or lose one of its remaining two games.
Iris Gunnarsdottir faced 11 shots in the contest and stopped nine to give the Reykjavik, Iceland, native 87 total saves for the year. She sits 13 away from the school-record single-season mark of 100 with two regular season games left to play.
The two goals she did allow came off the foot of the GSC's leading scorer Chloe Roberts. The first came at the 17th minute when she scored off a free kick from the left side just outside the penalty area, burying into the right corner, and she padded the visitor's lead 20 minutes into the second half when she scored on a penalty kick.
With only one shot on goal for the Blue and White on the scoreboard and time running down, it looked as if UNA would cruise to the victory, but
Cady Reisman was awarded a penalty kick in the 85th minute and capitalized to cut the Lions lead to 2-1.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Lady Chargers could get as they were unable to generate a shot, being outshot on the day 16-5 despite holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Lady Chargers will step out of the conference for the final time this season on Wednesday as they travel to Clayton State. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. CDT.
