MORROW, Ga. – With a penalty kick goal in the 105th minute, Clayton State slipped past the visiting UAH women's soccer team by a 1-0 score on Wednesday evening. The loss drops the Lady Chargers to 5-9-2 on the season while the Lady Lakers move to 8-6-2.
In the contest,
Iris Gunnarsdottir moved to the brink of history as she recorded a season-high 11 saves in the contest. The performance gives her 98 on the year to move within two of the school-record mark for saves in a season of 100
The first half was a relatively quiet stanza as the two teams combined for just five shots on goal. Four of the five were easy stops for the two keepers, and Gunnarsdottir turned away the best chance of the opening half, using a kick save to stop a point-blank try.
The majority of the second half was controlled by the Lakers, but Gunnarsdottir rose to the challenge and made seven saves in the period.
Producing the best try for the Lady Chargers in the half,
Khadijah Jannah took a loose rebound with the keeper down but pushed it just wide to keep the game scoreless and ultimately force extra time.
The Lakers were awarded a penalty kick in the first overtime, but the attempt clanked off the left post. The rebound try went in the net sparking a celebration by the home crowd, but it was ruled not to be a goal as Gunnarsdottir had not made contact with the ball on the PK.
When awarded a second PK in the second session of overtime, the Lakers capitalized to score the contest's only goal and win 1-0.
On the night, the Blue and White was outshot by an 18-7 margin, including a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal for the hosts.
The Lady Chargers will now wrap up the regular season on Sunday as they host West Florida for a noon showdown.
