HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – On a day that saw four seniors recognized for playing their last game on the UAH pitch, it was sophomore
Iris Gunnarsdottir who stole the headlines as she rewrote history in a 4-1 loss to visiting West Florida.
Gunnarsdottir broke a record that had stood for 13 years, registering four saves to close out the regular season with 102. The old mark of 100 was set by Laura Jackson in 1998.
But despite the record-breaking afternoon, the Lady Chargers still fell to drop to 5-9-2 (3-2-1 GSC), while West Florida improved to 10-3-2 (6-1 GSC).
The scoring started early for the visitors as Taylor Harbison struck in the 13th minute, and she followed that up with another goal in the 15th minute to produce a quick 2-0 advantage. The score remained that way until Tina Murray found the back of the net in the 63rd minute to put UWF comfortably ahead.
Two minutes later, however, the Lady Chargers would respond thanks in part to one of the four who were recognized prior to the contest.
Luting Sun fed a perfect ball for
Trisha Ehrhardt who buried it in the 65th minute to cut the lead to 3-1.
Putting the Argos back up by the three-goal margin, Alex Pickrell scored an unassisted tally in the 84th minute to produce the 4-1 final.
West Florida outshot the hosts by a 13-11 margin, though the Argos did hold a more commanding 8-3 advantage in shots that reached the target. UWF also held a 7-3 edge in corners, and a total of 23 fouls were called and four cards were issued on the day.
The Lady Chargers will now turn their attention to the Gulf South Conference Tournament as the fourth-seeded squad will face off against No. 1 seed North Alabama on Friday. The teams played to a 2-1 decision in favor of the Lions earlier this season.
The schedule for the tournament will be announced by the GSC later.
