Freshman Records Hat Trick In Rout

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Behind a stunning debut from Huntsville native Kyle Simmons, the UAH men's soccer team throttled visiting Talladega in the 2011 season opener at Charger Field on Thursday afternoon. The freshman notched a hat trick as the Chargers won 7-0 to start at 1-0. The Tornadoes drop to 0-5.

The seven goals mark the highest total in a game since UAH defeated Harding 7-1 in 2006.

Things started off relatively slowly early for the Charger offense as the team lead 2-0 at the halftime break. Jarrod Muggleton scored off a helper from Oscar Leon in the 11th minute, and Jonathon Savoy recorded an unassisted tally to produce the advantage.

The floodgates opened in the second stanza, however, beginning with Simmons' first strike of the contest which came in the 51st minute. Just two minutes later, Mitchell Wilson – who assisted on Simmons' goal – scored on a helper from Samuel Dean to put UAH up in commanding fashion at 4-0.

The scoring continued in the 63rd minute when Simmons notched his second of the night. Ragnar Gunnarsson picked up the assist.

Simmons – a 47-goal scorer during his time at Madison County High School – capped off the impressive opening act to his collegiate career by scoring on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.

The scoring onslaught was wrapped up in the 85th when Tyler Cunningham drove one home from Kyle Goncalves as nine Chargers factored into the contest's scoring.

Kel Markert was not challenged much by Talladega in turning in the clean sheet with three saves.

Clearly frustrated by their tough start, the Tornadoes were whistled for nine fouls and also picked up five cards, including having two players sent off.

The Chargers will look to build upon the impressive start when they host Lincoln Memorial on Sunday. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
