Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Matching its win total from a season ago in just its sixth game of the 2011 campaign, the UAH men's soccer team continued its strong start with a 5-0 shutout of Georgia Southwestern on Saturday afternoon at Charger Field. The Chargers improve to 4-2-0 with the win, while GSW falls to 2-3-0 on the year.
The Chargers have now scored 20 goals on the year, shattering the mark of 16 from 2010 as Head Coach Mike Mitchell appears to have his squad on quite an impressive turnaround.
Mitch Wilson started the scoring off, taking a nice ball from
Kyle Simmons and blasting it into the back of the net from in front in the 21st minute. The score marks the third goal for Wilson, and it is also the third time this season the freshman duo has teamed up for a score as Wilson has assisted on a pair of Simmons' goals.
Five minutes later in the 26th minute the Chargers would strike again as
Jarrod Muggleton headed the ball in off a nice corner kick taken by
Juan Carlos Salazar.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the hosts until UAH strung together two quick goals early in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Simmons rocketed a shot from distance that just cleared under the crossbar in the 59th minute before
Oscar Leon scored his first of the season on a free kick in the 61st.
The three-point day for Simmons gives the Gulf South Conference leader 15 on the year as he also has a team-best seven goals.
Wrapping the scoring up,
Brandon LeMier tallied his first of the season with
Tyler Cunningham and Tarerk Smaili picking up assists.
Kel Markert (3-2-0) earned his third win of the season, and he teamed up with
Jordan Steelman to post the team's third clean sheet of the year. Cade Jones (2-3) picked up the loss for the visitors.
The Blue and White dominated the contest, outshooting the Hurricanes 13-6 while holding an 8-3 advantage in shots that reached the target.
UAH will now go on the road, facing a stiff test in the form of North Georgia on Tuesday afternoon. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. CDT.
