HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The No. 2 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team is prepared to welcome 23 other teams from around the country for the annual Charger Chillout to be held this weekend at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex. The tournament field includes five Gulf South Conference institutions and three nationally-ranked teams.
The headlining contest of the weekend will occur on Sunday at 1 p.m. when the second-ranked Chargers take on No. 3 North Georgia, while Friday at 12:30 will also see a battle of the top-25 as No. 11 Rollins will play UNG.
Also of note for this weekend, two former players to wear the Blue and White return to the UAH-hosted tournament as coaches. Georgia College Head Coach Jamie Madewell-Grodecki was a member of the first softball team in program history at UAH, while Sage Woodham is now an assistant at Augusta State after being a two-time All-American in Huntsville.
All teams will play two contests per day with a total of 24 games being played across six fields.
The Chargers slate of opponents is as follows:
Friday, Feb. 17, 12:30 p.m. – Kentucky Wesleyan
Friday, Feb. 17, 2:30 p.m. – Bellarmine
Saturday, Feb. 18, 10:30 p.m. – Palm Beach Atlantic
Saturday, Feb. 18, 12:30 p.m. – Southern Indiana
UAH enters the weekend on quite on offensive tear as the team has recorded 68 hits in its four games thus far this season, a stunning average of 17 per contest. A trio of Chargers lead the way with seven hits apiece as
Kelli Long,
Mallory McNeal and
Stephanie Needham have all achieved the feat, and
Kathryn Whitlock paces the team by driving in eight runs on the year.
In the circle, all the attention goes to
Christina Boczek who tossed the 22nd no-hitter in program history in UAH's 21-0 win over Stillman on Wednesday, and
Whitney Toler has a perfect 2-0 mark on the year to go along with seven strikeouts.
