HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The nation's top-ranked softball team is set to continue play this weekend as UAH will welcome No. 13 Indianapolis for one game at 1 p.m. on Friday before turning around to play a doubleheader against Charleston (W.Va.) on Sunday at 1 p.m with all contests slated to be held at the Charger Softball Complex. The Chargers enter the weekend with an unblemished 8-0 record on the season.
The Blue and White has been incredibly strong offensively thus far, leading the Gulf South Conference with a team batting average of .448 – nearly 100 points higher than Valdosta State which ranks second in the category.
In fact, the Chargers lead the way in the conference in eight of the major offensive categories: batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs, runs batted in, doubles, home runs, and total bases.
Showing off terrific speed, UAH is tied with West Florida for the most steals in the league as both teams have totaled 18 on the year.
Also strong in the circle,
Whitney Toler is tied for the GSC lead in wins with four while
Christina Boczek sits just behind her with three, and the staff as a whole ranks second in the league with an ERA of just 1.80 on the year while also sitting second with 37 strikeouts.
The all-time series with Indianapolis includes the only tie in program history as the Chargers took the first game of a doubleheader last year 4-3 before the second game had to be called due to darkness in the eighth inning of a 3-3 deadlock. Overall, UAH is 4-0-1 against Friday's visitor.
Indianapolis jumped into the national rankings after a perfect 4-0 performance last weekend at the Charger Chillout, and the team's triumphs included a 4-2 win over nationally-ranked Rollins and a 2-0 victory over GSC member West Alabama. The Greyhounds concluded the rain-shortened weekend with a strong 13-0 win against Wayne State.
Coming to the Rocket City with a strong record as well, Charleston boasts a 5-1 record on the season, and the team is scheduled to play four games before battling the Chargers including a Saturday doubleheader with UIndy at UAH.
Sunday's meeting marks the first-ever between UAH and Charleston.
