Chargers, Lady Chargers Defeat CBU; Fall To Delta

MEMPHIS - The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams opened the 2012 campaign on Sunday, and both the men's and women's squads had similar results as both defeated Christian Brothers before falling to Delta State to give each team a 1-1 record to start the season.

Both matches with CBU were 5-0 victories as the teams decided to not player further with the contests already settled.

In the men's victory, the Chargers did not give up a single game to the Bucs. At the No. 1 doubles,  Christopher Kano and Daniel Canellas teamed up for the 8-0 victory, and that feat was matched by the No. 2 pair of Raphael Oliveira and Bruno Medeiros. Guillermo Reyes and Marcos Rivera won by default.

In singles action, Jordan Belcher was a perfect 6-0, 6-0 winner, and Rivera picked up the default victory to provide the 5-0 decision for the Chargers.

On the women's side, Melanie Junod and Alejandra Pacheco were 8-0 winners, while Adriana Buitrago teamed up with Brandi Dykes for an 8-1 triumph. Amanda Bevis and Lina Carvajal picked up the default victory.

Bevis then turned around and won 6-0, 6-0 to put the match away as Buitrago was the singles default winner for the Lady Chargers.

Against Delta State in men's action, the Chargers fell by a 6-3 score despite holding a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Kano and Canellas won 8-3 and Medeiros and Oliveira teamed up for a win by the same score to give UAH its two points.

Kano won the Chargers another point with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in singles, but the Blue and White could not earn another as two matches went three sets. Additionally, three sets went to a tiebreak as the contest was much closer than the 6-3 final would indicate.

The Lady Chargers fell to DSU by an 8-1 score with the lone point coming from a 6-3, 6-2 victory in singles by Junod. The match swung towards the Lady Statesmen after UAH was unable to capitalize upon having leads in each of the three doubles matches, falling in close fashion 8-5, 8-6, and 8-5 in the doubles play.

The two teams will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 11, when they travel to Valdosta State to face the Blazers at 2 p.m. CST.
