No. 5 UAH Sweeps Aside North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – Putting together a stellar offensive effort, the fifth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team pounded out 28 hits en route to sweeping in-state rival North Alabama by scores of 12-4 and 11-2. UAH's record improves to 20-7 (4-2 Gulf South Conference) with the pair of victories, and UNA falls to 11-8 (2-4 GSC).

Mary Kelley had herself quite a day in the two contests as she finished a combined 5-for-7 at the dish, blasting a pair of home runs en route to driving in nine runs on the day.

Kathryn Whitlock was also impressive in the doubleheader, picking up six hits in seven at-bats, while both Mallory McNeal and Stephanie Needham collected four hits. Both Needham and Kelli Long drove in three runs for the Blue and White.

The Chargers also picked up a pair of complete games in the circle as Whitney Toler (9-3) tossed the first contest, giving up seven hits and four runs – only two of which were earned. She struck out three UNA batters.

Whitney Gilbert (7-3) pitched the second game, and she struck out five while working around nine hits and allowing just two runs.

In the first contest, the Chargers quickly scored first, putting a two-spot on the board in the top of the first, but then UAH found itself down just as quickly as the Lions responded with four runs of their own in the bottom frame.

Started by a Cortney McNett solo shot to lead the inning off, the Chargers immediately responded with four runs in the second to reclaim the advantage at 6-4 after two.

The third inning was uneventful, but UAH added another pair of runs in the fourth and an additional run in the fifth, and a three-run seventh produced the 12-4 final.

The second game was never in much doubt as the Chargers scored three runs in the first thanks to a three-run bomb by Kelley, and three more runs in the second to take a 6-1 lead. Kelley's second jack gave the Chargers two more runs in the fourth, and UAH crossed the plate three more times in the fifth to create the 11-2 score in five innings.

The Chargers will return to action for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday as they travel to Miles for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
