UAH Men Defeat WKU, Ladies Fall

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams competed against Division I institution Western Kentucky on Wednesday, and the men knocked off the Hilltoppers 5-4 while the ladies fell 8-1. The men improve to 3-6 on the season, while the women drop to 5-7.

The Chargers built up a 2-1 lead on the men's side in doubles action as the top two pairings won for UAH. Daniel Canellas teamed up with Raphael Oliveira for an 8-2 win, while 8-2 was also the margin of victory for the duo of Christopher Kano and Thales Castro.

Bruno Medeiros turned in a strong 6-0-, 6-2 win in singles action from the No. 4 position to help push UAH towards the triumph, while Oliveira won 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 3. A 6-3,-6-4 decision for Marco Rivera at the No. 6 helped seal the match.

The contest could have been even more tilted to UAH were it not for a pair of close losses as Kano fell 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at the No. 1, and Guillermo Reyes was narrowly defeated 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 in the fifth position.

The lone point on the women's side came in singles play as Lina Carvajal was a 6-3, 6-2 winner in the third position.

Both teams will continue their homestand on Friday as they welcome Lee to Huntsville for a 1 p.m. start.
