HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams hosted Shorter on Thursday afternoon, and both teams fell to the visitors who are on track to become a member of the Gulf South Conference. The men's team falls to 4-10 on the season with the 5-4 loss, and the ladies lost 9-0 to drop to 5-12 on the year.
The defeat marked the third 5-4 setback of the season for the Chargers who fell behind 2-1 after doubles action, receiving a point from the No. 1 duo of Daniel Canellas and Christopher Kano who dominated for an 8-1 win.
In singles play, the UAH fifth and sixth positions were strong as Guillermo Reyes won 6-0, 6-3 from the five and Marcos Rivera was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at the six. The Blue and White's other point came in a tough match at No. 3 as Raphael Oliveira bounced back from an opening-set loss to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Kano played a close contest at the No. 2 but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-4.
On the women's side, the Lady Chargers' top performance came in No. 1 singles as
Melanie Junod fought hard in dropping a 7-5, 7-5 match, and
Alejandra Pacheco suffered the slimmest of defeats in her first set as she fell 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 at the fourth position.
The teams will take a couple days off and then return to action at home against Young Harris at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
