HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Closing out the regular season slate with a pair of doubleheaders at home, the No. 22 University of Alabama in Huntsville is set to welcome West Florida and West Alabama to the Charger Softball Complex this weekend. Saturday's pair with UWF is slated for 4 p.m., and UWA will visit at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Prior to the games on Sunday, there will be a ceremony to honor the team's four seniors –
Christina Boczek,
Sam Deep,
Stephanie Needham, and
Kelli Long.
If the Chargers can sweep West Florida, the team would lock up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Tournament as UAH enters the weekend at 17-7 in conference play and the Argos own a 15-9 mark.
When UAH last met West Florida, the two teams split the doubleheader in Pensacola as the Argos won the first game 5-4on a two-out walk-off homer, but the Chargers responded and bounced back for an 11-1 victory in the second game.
The next day the Chargers travelled to Livingston and swept the Tigers, winning 4-1 and 10-2.
Cortney McNett led the Blue and White in the sweep of UWA as she was 3-for-6 in the series, driving in five runs including two on one swing of the bat.
The four seniors are part of a class that has won 178 games and made two national championship game appearances.
Boczek owns a career 1.79 ERA in the circle and earlier this season she tossed the program's 22nd no-hitter when she held Stillman without a hit on Feb. 15. Ranking among the best in UAH history, Deep's biggest impact has been on the base paths as she has registered the fifth-highest total with 59 steals, and the consistent contributor has seen significant time during her four seasons.
At the Division II Softball Championship a season ago, Needham set the tournament record for hits in a game as she collected five against North Georgia, and she is a Gulf South Conference Player of the Year candidate this season as she leads the conference in batting average, slugging percentage, hits, runs batted in, total bases and home runs.
Long's excellence has improved with each passing season as her numbers have improved each year. The three-time All-GSC selection ranks second in UAH history in triples, stolen bases and sacrifice flies, fourth in runs, and seventh in batting average. During her freshman campaign, she established the school's longest hitting streak as she hit safely in 21 consecutive games.
