HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams are set to compete in the 2012 Gulf South Conference Tennis Championships held in Montgomery, Ala., this weekend. The men will play Delta State at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the ladies taking on North Alabama at 8:30 a.m. on the same day.
The men's squad earned the No. 5 seed after going 2-5 in conference play during the regular season, and the Chargers will square off against fourth-seeded Delta State who narrowly won the regular season contest between the two teams 6-3 on the first day of the spring season.
The Chargers were up 2-1 after doubles as Daniel Canellas and Christopher Kano won 8-3 and Bruno Medeiros and Raphael Oliveira also won 8-3 to produce the advantage. Kano secured the team's other point with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in singles action, and two matches in singles play went three sets as the Blue and White fell.
On the women's side, UAH holds the No. 6 seed after a 2-6 regular season, and the ladies will face the No. 6 seed North Alabama. In the regular season meeting with UNA, the Lady Chargers were defeated 9-0.
Melanie Junod and
Brandi Dykes put together the most competitive performances on that day.
Featuring an overall record of 5-13, the Lady Chargers can lean upon their combined 4-7 mark in matches away from Huntsville – a record that includes both road matches and those that occurred at neutral sites.
A victory for the men would send them into the semifinals later on Saturday against West Florida who received a bye. Should the women advance, they would take on the winner of Valdosta State and West Georgia at 2:30 p.m.
