MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams concluded their seasons on Saturday as both fell in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Delta State defeated the men 5-2, and the women fell to North Alabama by a 5-0 score.
The men finish at 5-11, and the ladies end the year at 5-14.
In the contest with Delta State, the Chargers took a point in doubles action as the No. 1 pairing of Daniel Canellas and Christopher Kano won 8-1, and UAH almost captured another point but Guillermo Reyes and Thales Castro narrowly fell 9-8 (7-4) as Delta took a 2-1 advantage to singles play.
UAH captured its other point as Kano bounced back from a first-set loss to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. No other Charger was able to capture a point before DSU was able to win its fifth, but the match was quite close. Bruno Medeiros fell at the fourth position 7-5, 6-4, and Marcos Rivera fell 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
On the women's side, North Alabama proved a tough challenge for the Lady Chargers. The squad fell behind 3-0 after doubles action with the No. 1 duo of
Melanie Junod and
Lina Carvajal falling 8-3 in the closest match.
The match marked the final one for Canellas – the lone senior on both squads.
