Men's Tennis Defeats UNA, Ladies Fall

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak and defeated visiting North Alabama on Friday, winning by a 6-3 score to move to 4-9 (2-5 Gulf South Conference) on the season. The ladies fell 9-0 and now own a record of 5-11 (2-5 GSC).
 
The Chargers got off to a good start, picking up two of the three points in doubles action. Daniel Canellas and Christopher Kano won 8-6, while the two-point decision was the same score for the pairing of Raphael Oliveira and Marcos Rivera.
 
Canellas and Kano along with Rivera took the momentum generated by their solid performances in doubles and converted that into victories in singles action.
 
From the No. 1 spot, Canellas won 6-2, 6-3, while Kano was a 6-4, 6-4 winner from the second position. Rivera captured a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the six, and Guillermo Reyes won the team's sixth point as he outlasted his competition in a three-set match, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
 
On the women's side, the two most competitive matches came at the singles No. 1 and No. 6 as Melanie Junod fell from the top spot 6-3, 6-3, and Brandi Dykes fell in two after coming up just short in the first set, losing 6-4, 6-2.
 
The teams will return to action on Thursday when they welcome Shorter for a 1 p.m. match in Huntsville.
