Chargers Push Past Georgia Southwestern In Road Win

Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. – A pair of late goals off the foot of Ragnar Leosson propelled the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team to its first win of the season on Saturday as the team defeated Georgia Southwestern 2-0 on the road. The Chargers improve to 1-6 on the season, and the Hurricanes fall to 1-6-1.

With the game scoreless and overtime looming over the proceedings, the sophomore tandem of Kyle Simmons and Leosson teamed up to put the Blue and White on top 1-0 in the 88th minute with Leosson finishing from the left corner of the box with a boot that went towards the far post and in for the score.

Just over a minute later in the 89th, the Akranes, Iceland, native struck again as his try from the right side and 40 yards out went over the GSW keeper Ryan Tucker and into the back of the night to produce the 2-0 final.

With three goals in two games, Leosson now owns a team-best four strikes on the season, and the assist gives Simmons five points for the year.

Simmons nearly had the game-winner himself in the 82nd, denied only by the iron.

The contest started with a flurry of activity as Kel Markert made his first of four saves in the seventh minute, and Mitch Wilson's try on the other end of the field in the same minute was stopped by Tucker. All of Markert's stops came in the first 45 minutes as he posted his first clean sheet of the season.

After being outshot 7-4 in the first half, the Chargers dominated the second half with a 13-1 advantage while the teams were even at 4-4 in shots that reached the target.

The Chargers will be back in action on Monday evening as they travel to Jackson, Tenn., to face Union in a Gulf South Conference contest.
