Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Falling on a late goal, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting West Alabama on Sunday at Charger Park. The Lady Chargers fall to 5-6 (1-3 Gulf South Conference) while UWA improves to 6-3-2 (4-1-1 GSC).
Although the Tigers outshot the Blue and White by a 16-3 margin on the day, the game was in doubt until Lydia Sutcliffe scored in the 84th minute to produce the 1-0 final.
Keeping her team in the contest,
Iris Gunnarsdottir made nine saves in the match. The Reykjavik, Iceland, native now has 70 stops on the year, and the junior is on pace to break the school record of 111 that she set a season ago.
UAH had just one shot on goal, but the Lady Chargers had a couple more scoring opportunities than that number would suggest.
Summer Carter nearly put the hosts on the board just over eight minutes into the contest as she sent one just left, and
Sydnie Fiocca had a bid for a header off a corner kick late in the contest that the UWA keeper snatched away just before she could attempt to flick it on goal.
West Alabama held a 7-4 advantage in corners on the day, and the Lady Chargers were whistled for 10 fouls compared to three for the guests.
The Lady Chargers will attempt to end the current slide on Tuesday when Martin Methodist visits for a 4:30 p.m. match at Charger Park to wrap up the three-game homestand.
