Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – In a game of cross-town opponents, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team romped past visiting Alabama A&M to a 5-0 decision to pick up the first win of the season and the first triumph in the
Jimmy Mitchell era. The Lady Chargers improve to 1-2 with the victory while A&M falls to 0-7.
It was a big day for freshman
Sydnie Fiocca who scored twice and added an assist on another goal to take over the team lead in scoring with five points, and junior forward
Khadijah Jannah also picked up a pair of scores in the contest.
Not taking long to take over the affair, the Lady Chargers scored in the 10th minute when keeper
Iris Gunnarsdottir booted a perfect ball to Fiocca who raced down the right side and past a defender on her way to goal before scoring her first collegiate tally.
The St. Catharine's, Ontario, native then picked up a helper in the 18th minute as she delivered a perfect cross to Jannah who buried it for her first strike of the season, and Jannah wasted no time adding to that total as she took a pass from
Cady Reisman and fired it home in the 19th.
Already with a dominating lead, the Lady Chargers added to their advantage in the 31st minute when the Summer-and-Summer show took over as
Summer Mooney notched her first collegiate point by assisting on
Summer Carter's goal.
Creating the 5-0 final, Fiocca scored for the second time in the 59th minute.
After
Emily Hancock found
Trisha Ehrhardt in front, Ehrhardt's scoring attempt was blocked by the A&M keeper but she was unable to secure the rebound as it landed right at Fiocca's feet, and she rifled it into the back of the net.
In posting the clean sheet, Gunnarsdottir showed great poise and focus as she was not frequently tested while turning away the four shots that came her way.
For the game, the Lady Chargers fired 16 shots compared to nine for the Lady Bulldogs, and the shot-on-goal advantage for UAH was 10-4.
Looking to build momentum off the big victory, the Blue and White will turn around to host rival North Alabama in a non-conference contest on Sunday at 2 p.m.
