Box Score DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team fell to No. 6 North Georgia on Tuesday night 4-1, but
Iris Gunnarsdottir made history in the setback as the Lady Chargers slip to 2-4-3 on the season while UNG improves to 7-1-0.
Matching a personal best with 11 stops, the UAH goalkeeper Gunnarsdottir established the program record for saves in a career as she has now tallied 285 during her three-year stint in Huntsville. She had entered the game in a tie with Laura Jackson who had established the old mark of 274 from 1997-99.
The evening also marked the 47th start in the UAH uniform for Gunnarsdottir who transferred from Maine prior to the 2011 season, and that start also broke a record for starts by a goalkeeper as she surpassed the 46 set by Sarah Sollie from 2002-05. The Reykjavik, Iceland, native also owns the career for goalkeeper minutes as she has played 4,379 during her UAH career.
The contest started out strong offensively for the Lady Chargers as it was the visiting side that notched the first goal.
In just the seventh minute of the game,
Niina Jetsu placed a corner kick perfectly into the box, and
Marie Blunt rocketed it into the back of the net to put UAH on top 1-0, giving Blunt her second score of the season.
North Georgia quickly responded however, notching rapid goals as the hosts scored in the 11th and 12th minutes to take a 2-1 lead, and the Nighthawks added another goal in the 43rd minute to take a 3-1 advantage into the halftime break.
UNG completed the scoring in the 60th minute to create the 4-1 final.
Though North Georgia would own a significant 25-5 edge in shots, the Lady Charger offensive effort did produce several strong opportunities as evidenced by the fact that the Nighthawks only held a slim 9-7 advantage in corner kicks.
UAH will continue play on the road on Friday when it travels to Livingston to take on West Alabama in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
