Bjornsson Leads UAH to Important 3-1 Win Over Delta

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Hermann Bjornsson scored twice – including a stunning strike that proved to be the game-winner – and the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team defeated visiting Delta State 3-1 in front of a large Charger Park crowd on Friday night. The Chargers improve to 6-4-1 (4-4-0 GSC), while Delta State remains winless at 0-9-1 (0-6-1 GSC).

Bjornsson's goal in the 60th minute electrified the crowd, as he spun into the air before moving his body parallel to the playing surface as he fired the ball into the back of the net to provide the Chargers with a 2-0 advantage while notching his first career goal. Kyle Simmons began the play with a perfect ball down the right side of the field, and Andrew Ingram completed a strong run by crossing it towards Bjornsson who was in the middle of the box.

The spectacular goal would not be all the scoring on the night for the freshman from Iceland, however, as Bjornsson would add his second of the night – and of the season – in the 76th minute off of the second assist of the night for Simmons who finished the evening with four points as it was he who opened the scoring in the contest.

Registering his GSC-leading 11th goal of the season to maintain his goal-per-game pace, Simmons scored just into the 10th minute of the contest as he finished a cross off the foot of Esra Arnasson, blasting it from the left side to the far post.

The junior from Huntsville now has 24 points on the year.

For the contest, UAH outshot Delta State 13-9 and held a slim 3-2 advantage in corners.

The visitors put five shots on Michael Winstone's goal – including Joe Stockglausner's score in the 87th minute when the contest was all but decided – and the sophomore turned away four in his first start of the season to register his first collegiate victory.

UAH will look to continue its strong play at home when Christian Brothers visits on Sunday. Kick-off is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Charger Park.
