Box Score ROME, Ga. – Picking up another exciting win, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team defeated host Shorter by a 2-1 score with a strike in the final minutes on Friday night. The win improves the Chargers to 9-5-1 (7-5-0 GSC), while Shorter slips to 8-5-2 (7-4-1 GSC).
 
With the game tied at 1-1 and the clock running under three minutes to play, Sam Dean played a perfect ball on a deep free kick from about 15 yards beyond the top of the box, finding Kyle Simmons who then volleyed it past the Shorter keeper who did not have a chance to react on the quick score that gave Dean his second assist of the season.
 
For Simmons, it marks his conference-leading 12th goal of the season, and the game-winning tally is the fourth of the season for the junior which pulls him into a tie for first in that category.
 
Earlier in the second half, Simmons added a point when he assisted on the game's first goal, so he also is tied for the GSC lead in points with 27.
 
That goal came in the 59th minute on a counterattack after UAH reserve keeper Brent DeSilva made a pair of strong saves to keep the game scoreless. Simmons played it into Anthony Benitez whose header went high, but Yuri Ivanov waited for it to return to the ground at which point he would deposit it by the Shorter keeper to give UAH a 1-0 lead.
 
The score is the third of the season for Ivanov, while Benitez now ranks second in the GSC with six assists.

The hosts would even the contest at 1-1 in the 71st minute, but DeSilva would record three stops to earn his first collegiate win.
 
Michael Winstone started the contest for the Chargers and notched a save as the Hawks finished the evening with a slight 5-4 edge in shots on goal, and Shorter would also hold an advantage in corners, taking nine to UAH's three.
 
For the contest, 26 fouls were whistled, and seven cards were issued.
