UAH Picks Up 2-1 Victory Over Visiting Union

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Klaire Phillips scored twice, Shayla McWhorter picked up the victory in goal, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team defeated visiting Union 2-1 on a crisp fall Monday night at Charger Park. The non-conference victory moves the Lady Chargers to 3-5-3, while Union falls to 3-2-3.

McWhorter – who earned the start in place of Iris Gunnarsdottir who was sitting out the contest after being sent off against West Alabama – made six stops, including several big ones in the first half when Union had possession for much of the period.

Despite the visitors controlling much of the play, it was the home side that would get on the board first as Grace Morgan played a nice ball to Klaire Phillips who fired it from just outside of the box and perfectly into the upper-left corner to produce a 1-0 advantage for the Lady Chargers in the 40th minute.

It appeared that would be the score at the half, but with 15 seconds left in the opening stanza, Kayleigh Patterson shot it from about 30 yards out, and her attempt caromed off a UAH defender and into the net to knot the contest at 1-1 at the intermission.

The score would remain that way until the 66th minute when Phillips again found herself in a strong position just outside of the box, and she booted it to the far post and past the Union keeper for her second goal of the night.

The freshman Athens, Ala., was brought in to be a defender, but Head Coach Jimmy Mitchell has moved her into more of a midfield role in recent games. That move has resulted in Phillips taking over the team lead in both goals and points with three and seven, respectively, after the two-goal night on Monday.

Following the go-ahead goal, the Lady Chargers would not allow another shot by the Lady Bulldogs in the final 24 minutes of the contest.

The shot counter was tilted in Union's favor by a 17-7 advantage, but shots were even at 4-4 in the second half. Union also held a 7-2 advantage in corners, mainly due to a three-minute stretch in the first half that saw the Lady Chargers concede four consecutive to the visitors, but UAH was able to dispatch of the threat on each.

The Lady Chargers will look to build upon the victory on Friday when Delta State visits for a 5 p.m. GSC match at Charger Park.
