Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team punched its ticket to the 2013 Gulf South Conference Championships on Saturday as
Melody Dodd scored with less than two minutes remaining in double overtime to produce a 1-0 victory over Union. The Lady Chargers end the regular season at 4-9-5 (2-6-2 GSC), while Union falls to 6-6-3 (4-4-2 GSC).
The victory propelled UAH past West Georgia for the sixth and final spot in next week's GSC tournament.
"To have 1:57 left in your season, it's pretty crazy and pretty stressful," said head coach
Jimmy Mitchell following the thrilling win. "But it's also pretty exciting when the ball goes in the net and you have a second life and a chance to continue to play."
The game was scoreless through regulation and the first 18 minutes of extra time, but senior
Danielle Schager was able to feed it to Dodd who scored her third of the season in the 109th minute.
"Danielle played a great ball in, and Dodd was able to put a foot on it and put it in," Mitchell said. "It was a very emotional night for our seniors as not only their season was winding down but also their careers. We battled very hard and gave a lot of energy."
With a tie not enough to advance the Lady Chargers into the postseason, Mitchell employed a 3-5-2 strategy in the first overtime before switching to a 3-4-3 in the second extra period.
"We knew that would give up some chances, but we also know we have a quality goalkeeper," Mitchell said.
Union fired four shots in the extra time, including one on senior keeper
Iris Gunnarsdottir's goal that she stopped for her fourth save of the night, and the Reykjavik, Iceland, native notched her third shutout of the season.
For the night, Union held a 22-7 advantage in shots but only a 4-3 margin in shots on goal, and the hosts also held a 7-2 edge in corners.
UAH will now focus its attention on Valdosta State and the Blazers have the No. 3 seed in the GSC tournament.
