HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Starting its last full week of Gulf South Conference regular season play, the No. 8 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team is set to host Union on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall before travelling to rival North Alabama on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Chargers go into Thursday's contest at 19-4 (12-3 Gulf South Conference).
UAH currently sits in first in the GSC standings, but both North Alabama and Christian Brothers sit close behind in a tie for second with a conference mark of 10-4.
In the other set of important rankings, the Chargers sit second to Florida Southern in the NCAA South Region – the standings that determine the seeding of the NCAA tournament at the end of the regular season and conference tournaments.
The Mocs travel to Eckerd who is ranked sixth in the region on Wednesday night.
Winners of six of their last seven games, the Chargers are paced by a quartet of players who average in double figures led by
Jaime Smith who is scoring more than 17 points per game while fellow senior
Zane Campbell is averaging almost 13 points per contest.
It was that duo who combined for 53 points to provide the team with a win over Delta State its last time out, and that victory coupled with Union's overtime upset of UNA pushed the Chargers back into the lead in the league.
Union owns a 6-16 (4-10 GSC) mark, but two of the team's wins have come against the top teams in the conference as the Bulldogs defeated Christian Brothers on Feb. 9 before upsetting UNA this past weekend. Both wins, however, came on Union's home floor where the Chargers were a 78-62 winner earlier this season.
Anthony Freeman paces the Bulldogs as he is scoring 14.5 points per game while also leading the team on the glass with a rebounding average of 6.5.
UNA knocked off the Chargers in Huntsville by an 81-71 score on Jan. 19 to spark a five-game winning streak, but the Lions have dropped two of three since then including the 101-99 overtime setback at Union.
Saturday's contest will also be of vital important to the postseason hopes of both North Alabama and UAH as UNA landed in fourth in the regional rankings announced earlier.
Bruce Adams is scoring 14.1 points a game to lead the Lions.
Both contests will be broadcast throughout the Tennessee Valley on 97.7 The Zone.
