Men's Tennis Wins Third Straight With 9-0 Victory

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's tennis team captured its third straight win on Friday, blanking visiting Carson-Newman 9-0 at home. The Chargers record evens at 3-3 with the victory.

“We are still having to find ourselves in this men's team,” said Head Coach Daniel Finn following the match. “The good news is I feel like every day we have some players really coming into their own and figuring it out.”

Though the cold and dreary conditions perhaps subdued the squad somewhat according to Finn, the team grabbed a quick 3-0 lead after doubles.

The No. 2 pairing of Christopher Kano and Raphael Oliveira won the first point with an 8-2 victory, while Fredrik Graaner and Guillermo Reyes captured an 8-4 victory at the No. 3. In No. 1 doubles, Jose Soto and Nestor Perez found themselves down 4-5 but at that point had a strong service hold and followed that up with a break of serve to take control and win 8-5.

In singles play, Soto rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win at the first position, and the match was sealed for the Chargers when Kano won at the No. 3 after his opponent retired from the match.

In the other singles matches, Reyes dominated at the sixth position as he won 6-0, 6-1, while Oliveira was a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the No. 5. Perez captured a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win to capture the No. 2 point, and Graaner bounced back from an opening-set defeat to win 3-6, 6-1, 7-6.

The squad will have Saturday off before travelling to Bellarmine for an 11 a.m. match on Sunday.
