Box Score 2 FLORENCE, Ala. – The No. 24 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team fell in two close ballgames on Saturday, dropping a 7-6 decision to Georgia College before losing 4-3 to Drury. The Chargers now sit at 7-5 on the season.
The team will continue play at the 2013 UNA Invitational on Sunday when it plays Missouri-St. Louis at 10 a.m. before taking on No. 7 Indianapolis at noon.
Georgia College 7, UAH 6
After falling behind 2-0 as Georgia College plated a run in the top frame of both the second and third innings, the Chargers erupted for five runs in their half of the third.
With
Brianna Sullivan at first and
Mallory McNeal at first,
Meagan Billingsley attempted to sacrifice the runners over but was able to reach on an error by the Georgia College first baseman that also allowed Mallory to score to cut the Charger deficit in half.
Kathryn Whitlock then reached on an infield single that scored Sullivan, and a double down the left field line off the bat of
Abby MacKay put the Chargers ahead as Billingsley came home on the play.
Cortney McNett picked up an RBI on a groundout to make it 4-2, and MacKay scored on a
Nicole Bobrowski base hit that put UAH in front 5-2.
Unfortunately the lead would be short-lived as Georgia College would score three runs in the top half of the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.
After not scoring in their half of the fourth and holding the opposition to nothing in the fifth, the Chargers would again pull back in front in the bottom of the fifth as a one-out walk for MacKay allowed her to score when Bobrowski doubled into left.
The 6-5 advantage evaporated just as quickly as the earlier lead had as Georgia College capitalized on an error in sixth that extended the inning and allowed the team to tie it at 6-6, and the winning run crossed the plate on another miscue in the seventh.
UAH used three pitchers in the game as
Whitney Toler started the contest and struck out four in 3.1 innings.
Whitney Gilbert (1-2) picked up the loss.
Drury 4, UAH 3
UAH drew first blood as Whitlock singled in
Kelli Pullin in the top of the third to produce an early 1-0 advantage for the Chargers.
Drury responded in the fourth with a big four-run inning, but the Chargers found themselves right back in the ballgame thanks to a long fly in the fifth.
After Sullivan led the frame off with an infield single,
Rae Edenfield belted her first collegiate home run over the fence in left to pull the Chargers to within one at 4-3, but unfortunately UAH would not be able to find the equalizing run.
Gilbert (1-3) started the contest and gave up three runs but none were earned. Toler struck out three more in three innings of relief.
