LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches on Sunday as it defeated previously-unbeaten Bellarmine on the road by a 6-3 score. The Chargers move to 4-3 on the season – one win shy of matching last year's total for the entire year.
“I am very proud of our guys today and the way we competed,” said first-year Head Coach Daniel Finn. “We came into a hostile environment and beat a very good team today in its own house. We'll enjoy this one tonight and get ready for the next one on Tuesday.”
The squad opened up a 2-1 lead after doubles as
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez won 8-4 in the No. 1 match while the No. 2 duo of
Christopher Kano and
Raphael Oliveira won by an 8-2 score.
Soto then one at the No. 1 singles in routine form 6-3, 6-3 to extend the UAH lead to 3-1, but it was at that point that the match became interesting.
Bellarmine captured the point at the No. 2 and No. 5 to make it 3-3, but the momentum swing was short-lived as Kano produced a valiant comeback after losing the first set of his No. 3 singles match. He fell 6-7 (4) before winning in a tiebreaker in the second 7-6 (1), and Kano then cruised to a 6-1 victory in the third to give UAH the point and the lead once again at 4-3.
Needing just one more point to win the match,
Fredrik Graaner won at the No. 4 position 6-4, 7-5 in a close battle to clinch the contest for the Chargers.
Guillermo Reyes then won 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10) to produce the 6-3 final.
UAH will now open up conference play on Tuesday when the team travels to face West Alabama at 1 p.m.
