LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville teams played their Gulf South Conference road matches of the season and the men's team lost 7-2 while the women's squad fell 8-1 to host West Alabama. The Lady Chargers slip to 3-1 (1-1 GSC) with the setback, while UWA improves to 7-3 (2-3 GSC). The men fall to 4-4 (0-1 GSC), and the No. 34 Tigers move to 7-2 (3-2 GSC).
The Lady Chargers fell behind 3-0 after doubles, though the No. 3 pairing of
Jessica Grouppierre put forth a strong effort to narrowly fall 8-6.
Grouppierre then went on to capture the team's only point of the day as she won at the No. 1 position. She fell in the first set 5-7 but fought back to take the second set 6-4 and then – with the match already decided – won an abbreviated third set to secure the victory.
On the men's side, UAH trailed just 2-1 after doubles as the No. 1 pairing of
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez won 8-4.
Christopher Kano and
Raphael Oliveira played competitively at the No. 2 but ultimately fell 8-5.
In singles action, the team's second point came from the No. 4 match as
Fredrik Graaner won 6-2 in the first set and bounced back from a 2-6 setback in the second with a win in an also abbreviated third set.
Nestor Perez attempted to recover from falling 6-1 in the first set at No. 2 singles as he at one point staved off three match points in the second set before ultimately falling 6-4. Also challenging for a singles point was
Guillermo Reyes as he won the first set 5-7, but he then fell 6-3 in the second and his West Alabama opponent won a shortened third set.
The squads will now head to Reinhardt in Waleska, Ga., on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
