BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams fell on Sunday to a pair of Division I opponents. The men lost 5-2 to Winthrop to slip to 5-5 on the season, while the ladies lost 7-0 to Eastern Kentucky and dropped to 4-2 for the year.
In the men's match, Winthrop captured all three doubles matches to earn the point. Each match was competitive – none more so than the No. 1 paring of
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez who fell 9-8 (4).
In singles play, again nearly every match was contested, and UAH's points came at the No. 2 and 4 positions as Perez won 6-4, 6-1 at the second position and
Christopher Kano won 6-2, 7-5 at the fourth. Soto put up a challenge but fell 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1, and
Raphael Oliveira also was a tough out as he was tripped up 6-3, 6-3.
It was a tough go on the women's side again the Division I opposition.
Jessica Groupierre turned in the best performance as she responded in the No. 1 singles after falling 6-0 to make it close in the second set but ultimately dropped it 7-5.
Both teams will look to bounce back on Monday when they host Alabama A&M at 2 p.m.
