Chargers Split Extra-Inning Games at Delta State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team played a pair of games that went into extra innings on Saturday, dropping a 3-2 decision in the first game in nine innings before turning around to win 14-3 in eight innings in the nightcap. The Chargers move to 12-10 (5-3 Gulf South Conference), while DSU now is 11-13 (5-5 GSC).

UAH will return to action on Sunday at Christian Brothers. First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.

Delta State 3, UAH 2 (F/9)

The first contest was a low-scoring affair that saw the teams total 10 hits with the Chargers outhitting the Lady Statesmen 6-4 in the contest.

DSU scored the first run as it tallied an unearned run in the first inning, but the visitors quickly responded with a run of their own in the top half of the second as a Nicole Bobrowski base knock scored Mary Kelley to tie the contest.

The score remained that way until the fifth inning when UAH would receive its own unearned run when Kathryn Whitlock doubled into center to plate Brianna Sullivan and put the Chargers on top 2-1.

That score looked as if it was going to provide the Chargers with a victory, but an error with two outs allowed the Lady Statesmen to tie the contest and force extra innings where the home team would score on another two-out error in the ninth to win it 3-2.

Whitney Toler started the contest for the Blue and White and lasted 4.1 innings, allowing only three hits and the one unearned run. Freshman Kimberly Jack tossed 4.1 innings of relief, only giving up one hit and the two unearned runs while striking out three.

Whitlock finished with a multi-hit performance as she was 2-for-5 during the contest including the RBI double.

UAH 14, Delta State 3 (F/8)

The second contest was deadlocked through seven innings, also, but this time it was a late-game run from UAH that forced the extra frames.

With Delta State leading 3-2, Cortney McNett blasted her team-best fifth home run of the season to knot the contest at 3-3. It was the second homer of the game for the Chargers as Abby MacKay belted a solo shot in the third.

Senior Hannah Woodruff recorded the team's other RBI to that point as she started the scoring with a single in the second that scored McNett.

With Toler – who was in the circle in relief – shutting down the Lady Statesmen in both the sixth and seventh innings, the stage was set for a stunning eighth for UAH.

The team sent 14 batters to the plate – including 11 with two outs on the board – and the team crossed the plate 11 times in the frame. Kelli Pullin drove in three runs in the inning in two separate at-bats as she started the scoring with a groundout RBI before knocking in two more later on a single into left. Whitlock also had three RBI in the frame as she had a bases-clearing double with the bags packed with Chargers.

Kellie Johnson, Meagan Billingsley, Megan Walker, and McNett also drove in runs in the frame.

The big inning helped the team outhit Delta State by a 17-8 margin for the game, and Kelley and McNett both recorded three-hit performances while Whitlock and Woodruff both had a pair of hits.

Toler (6-1) earned the win as she tossed three scoreless innings while giving up just two hits while striking out two. Whitney Gilbert started the contest and scattered five hits over four innings of work, and Jack threw the final inning and did not give up a run.
