HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team is set to hit the road for a pair of conference doubleheaders as the team will travel to Florence to take on rival North Alabama at 1 p.m. on Tuesday before venturing to Union on Wednesday with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m. UAH enters the contests on a seven-game winning streak and owning an 18-10 (9-3 Gulf South Conference) record.
The Chargers have rocketed up the GSC standings to the top position among teams that are eligible for the postseason thanks in large part to an improving offense that has averaged more than nine runs per game during the winning streak, while the team's ERA has also dropped to 2.50 on the year.
Freshman
Kimberly Jack has been key to the team's pitching success as she boast a league-low 1.50 ERA on the season, while
Whitney Gilbert and
Whitney Toler sit fifth and sixth in the league with 55 and 47 strikeouts, respectively.
Among the league leaders offensively for the Chargers is
Cortney McNett who paces the conference with a strong on-base percentage of .536, while her seven home runs are tied for second best in the GSC.
Mary Kelley – who is tied with McNett for eighth in the conference with 23 RBI – is second in the GSC as she already has three triples on the year.
The contests with North Alabama will mark the 69th and 70th overall between the two programs as the Chargers hold a wide 54-14 edge in the all-time series including sweeping five games from the Lions a season ago as the team won 12-4 and 11-2 in Florence.
In those two games, Kelley went 5-for-7 at the dish, blasting a pair of home runs en route to driving in nine runs on the day.
UNA comes into the meeting with a 23-9 overall record but the Lions are 8-6 in GSC play. Callie Steadman is on top of the offensive ledger with a .385 batting average, while Mallory Patterson has driven in 32 runs on the strength of seven long flies.
Holder of a 10-3 record, Breanna Riley has 2.29 ERA to go along with 83 Ks to lead the team in the circle.
The Chargers have never met Union who is playing a full conference schedule while not being eligible for postseason play. The Lady Bulldogs are 12-9 (7-8 GSC) and winners of four of their last six including a sweep of Delta State and a win over both Shorter and North Alabama.
Only one player for Union hits over .300 as Shelby Lamb is hitting .359 with four home runs, but the team also features Kelly Robey in the circle who has a 1.64 ERA and 87 strikeouts with her 6-5 record only indicative of the offense not providing much run support.
Live stats for both doubleheaders will be available.
