HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Starting a seven-game homestand, the University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team is set to host No. 21 West Alabama at noon on Saturday at Charger Park. The game time between the Chargers (21-11, 12-4 Gulf South Conference) and the Tigers (20-10, 9-8 GSC) has been moved up an hour to hopefully avoid predicted afternoon rainfall.
UAH has won 10 of its previous 11 games including a 3-1 road trip to North Alabama and Union this past Tuesday and Wednesday. During the strong stretch, the Chargers have averaged more than eight runs per contest while limiting the opposition to just over two runs per game including three shutouts.
Hitting .330 as a team, the Charger offense is led by
Cortney McNett who is hitting .411 on the year to rank sixth in the league while placing second in the conference with eight homers. Particularly strong on this past road trip was
Mallory McNeal who jumped up to second on the squad with a .364 batting average as she recorded a pair of games with three hits.
The two teams already met this year in a doubleheader in Livingston as the squads split on the day with UAH winning 10-7 in the first game before falling 4-3 in the nightcap.
The Chargers blasted three homers in the victory with
Nicole Bobrowski,
Mary Kelley and
Brianna Sullivan all recording long flies as UAH pounded out 12 hits with the aforementioned trio each recording a pair.
Kimberly Jack was strong in relief in the circle on the day for the Chargers as she gave up just two hits while throwing 3.1 innings total in making two appearances, and she did not allow a Tiger to score.
UWA enters the contest having swept aside Miles earlier this week, but prior to that, Saturday's visitors had dropped four of five including being swept by UNA and Shorter.
The Tigers feature a potent offense that is averaging nearly eight runs per game and has eight batters that are hitting better than .350. Anna Shartzer hits .422 to sit on top of the batting average ledger, while Whitney Brown has knocked in a team-best 37 runs.
The team's pitching staff owns a 3.76 ERA on the season with Sarah Ray posting a 12-3 record in 15 appearances to go along with an ERA of 2.68.
