UAH Falls in Doubleheader at West Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville was swept by West Florida on Saturday, falling 6-5 in the first contest of the day before being shutout for the first time in 2013 as the team fell 5-0 in the nightcap. The Chargers slip to 28-13 (17-6 Gulf South Conference), while UWF improves to 15-19 (8-12 GSC).

UAH will look to bounce back from the pair of setbacks when the team travels to Valdosta State on Sunday. Heavy rain is in the forecast for the area and has forced the start of the doubleheader to be moved to 9 a.m. CDT.

Game One – West Florida 6, UAH 5

The Chargers fell behind in the game as West Florida scored a run in the first, added a pair in the third, and crossed the plate three times in the fourth to grab a big 6-0 lead, but UAH would not go quietly in the game as the squad would put together a big fifth inning to place itself right back into the contest.

Mallory McNeal started the rally as she collected a one-out infield single, and she moved over to second when Meagan Billingsley was hit by a pitch to give UAH runners on base for the top of the lineup.

Facing a 2-2 count, leadoff batter Brianna Sullivan poked one through the left side, filling the bags with Chargers and allowing a pair of runs to score when Mary Kelley reached on an error by the West Florida shortstop.

After Cortney McNett struck out for the inning's second out, Kathryn Whitlock doubled into the gap in right center to plate both Sullivan and Kelley, and the Chargers pulled to within one of the hosts on an RBI single off the bat of Abby MacKay.

With her team trailing just 6-5, Kimberly Jack entered the game in the bottom half of the fifth in relief of starter Whitney Toler (10-2), and she would give up just one hit to give the Chargers a chance with the heart of the order due up in the top half of the seventh.

Kelley led that frame off with a base hit, and she was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelli Pullin before moving to third on a Whitlock grounder, but Kelley would be stranded there to give the Argos the win.

Kelley finished the contest with three of UAH's eight hits.

Game Two – West Florida 5, UAH 0

The Chargers were shutout for the first time since a GSC tournament loss to Valdosta State on April 28 of last year as the UAH bats were unable to do anything after McNeal and Kelley picked up back-to-back hits in the first inning.

West Florida tallied its first run in the first frame and would add runs in the third, fifth and sixth to plate its five runs in the contest.

Taylor Bailey (9-7) was masterful in the circle for the Argos as she gave up just the two hits while striking out six. After the first frame, she did not allow a UAH player to reach second base – walking Pullin with two gone in the second and hitting Nicole Bobrowski in the fourth.

Picking up the loss for UAH was Whitney Gilbert (7-7) who surrendered three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work. Jack finished the contest for the Chargers, allowing two runs on four hits.
