NORMAL, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's tennis team cruised to an easy 7-0 win at Division I foe Alabama A&M on Tuesday in its final regular season contest of the year. The Chargers improve to 13-10 with the triumph.
"I am proud of the way the guys took care of business today,” said Head Coach Daniel Finn following the match. “A&M was a feisty team and ready to compete. Our guys handled themselves well, and now we can focus and get ready for conference.”
UAH will next take to the courts on Saturday when the team takes on Delta State in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at 11 a.m. in Montgomery, Ala.
On Tuesday, the team earned the first point of the match when it took the doubles point with the pairing of
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez winning at the No. 1 position by an 8-1 score while the second position pairing of Fredrick Graaner and
Guillermo Reyes won 8-6.
Christopher Kano and
Raphael Oliveira won by default at the No. 3 doubles match.
The match was played under Division I rules with one point awarded for doubles play.
The Chargers proceeded to then also win all six points in singles to earn the shutout victory.
Oliveira won by default at the sixth position for the team's second point, and Reyes picked up the team's third point by winning 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 match. The match was sealed for the visitors by Kano's third-position 6-0, 6-0 decision, and Perez was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner at the fourth position.
Wrapping up the match, Soto and Graaner had to battle through three-set matches at the first and second positions, respectively. Soto ended up winning 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6), and Graaner also bounced back from a first set loss to win 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7).
