Chargers Sweep Aside Delta State on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Bouncing back from the tough road trip a weekend ago, the University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team easily swept past visiting Delta State on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers won 7-3 in the day's first game and took the second contest 10-2 in six innings to improve to 30-13 (18-6 Gulf South Conference), and the Lady Statesmen slipped to 16-29 (8-17 GSC).

UAH will return home on Sunday to face Christian Brothers at 1 p.m.

Game One – UAH 7, Delta State 3

A four-run first inning propelled the Chargers to victory, and three of the runs came off one mighty swing of the bat from Nicole Bobrowski.

With a run already in on Kathryn Whitlock's single through the left side earlier in the frame, Bobrowski stepped up to the dish with two on and two outs, and she took the 1-1 pitch deep to left. The three-run homer was the fourth of the season for the junior.

Delta State would push across a pair of runs in the top half of the second to cut the lead in half at 4-2, but Brianna Sullivan would score on a Cortney McNett groundout in the home half to put the Chargers in front by a 5-2 score.

Neither team would score in the third inning before the Lady Statesmen would again pull to within two at 5-3 by tacking a run to their total in the fourth. The guests threatened to cut further into the UAH advantage, but Kimberly Jack (12-4) would enter the game in relief of starter Whitney Toler and squash the threat. With runners at second and third and just one out, Jack struck out the first DSU batter she faced and induced a grounder for the third out to keep the game at 5-3.

A pair of sacrifice flies by McNett and Abby MacKay in the bottom frame of the fifth provided UAH with its final two runs, and Jack pitched three more scoreless innings to earn her 12th win of the season. In the 3.2 innings, the freshman struck out four and gave up just two hits.

The Chargers were strong on the basepaths in the game as the team totaled seven stolen bases with Mary Kelley recording three and Sullivan notching a pair.

Game Two – UAH 10, Delta State 2 (F/6)

The game was scoreless through an inning and a half, but Bobrowski would earn her fourth RBI of the day when she singled in Whitlock in the second after the senior shortstop had started the inning off with her 13th double of the season.

UAH proceeded to then take complete control of the contest in the third as the team sent all nine batters to the plate in the inning. McNett had the big hit of the inning with a two-run double, while Kelley, Whitlock and MacKay all also drove in runs in the frame to give the Chargers a 6-0 lead.

Sullivan would drive in a run in the fourth to make it 7-2 after Delta State had scratched out a couple scores of its own in the top frame of the inning, and the contest was wrapped up in the sixth as Kelley drove in Kellie Johnson with a base hit to center before McNett ended the contest with another two-run double.

McNett regained the team lead in RBI with the four as she now owns 45 on the season.

Whitney Gilbert (8-7) struck out five and scattered five hits over 4.1 innings to help lead the team to the sweep. Jack tossed the final 1.2 innings of the affair and picked up another pair of strikeouts to help preserve the victory.

UAH pounded out 13 hits in the contest with Sullivan leading the way with 13. Kelley, McNett and Bobrowski all had a pair in the game.
