LIVE STATS
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team will host a pair of conference opponents this weekend, welcoming Shorter on Saturday with West Georgia visiting on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are slated to start at 1 p.m.
The Chargers are winners of 11 of their last 12 contests and enter the weekend with an overall record of 22-11 and a 13-4 mark in Gulf South Conference play. Though Shorter does have a league-best 15-3 mark in GSC action, the Hawks are not eligible for postseason play and thus UAH technically sits in first place.
UAH sits in the middle of pack of most offensive categories in the GSC, but one area where the Blue and White has been particularly impressive is in stolen bases. The Chargers own a league-best 70 steals on the season with West Alabama being the team with the second-most with 41.
Four Chargers rank among the top 10 in the league in steals with
Brianna Sullivan's 19 placing her second. Twelve UAH players have recorded at least two steals, and the team has only been caught stealing on six of its 70 attempts on the year.
Another leader statistically on the team is pitcher
Kimberly Jack who has been a tremendous asset to the team as a reliever in the circle. She has posted a 1.76 ERA in 25 outings while striking out 40 in just under 68 innings pitched.
Jack has recorded five saves on the season, and that number ranks tops among all Division II pitchers.
Shorter is 29-5 overall on the season and has won eight of its last nine games, and the Hawks are tough on the road, losing only one contest in their 15 games away from Rome.
The team bats at a strong .336 clip with Felicia Morris leading the way with an average of .416, and five Shorter players have at least 20 RBI on the season led by Kayla Cooper's 29 which come on the strength of a team-best 19 extra-base hits including eight homers.
The pitching staff owns a 2.07 ERA on the season, and Christina Ezell has struck out 128 batters in 102 innings pitched.
The weekend meeting marks the first-ever between the two programs as the doubleheader in Rome was washed out by rain earlier this season.
UAH and West Georgia met earlier in the year with the Chargers pounding out 25 hits in sweeping the Wolves, outscoring UWG 22-2. The Wolves travel to the Rocket City at 12-21 (5-15 GSC), but the team has split its previous two doubleheaders.
The team is hitting just .261, and the pitching staff features an ERA of 4.48 on the year.
