About the Chargers
OPENING CONFERENCE PLAY: Friday night's contest against Shorter marks the first league game of the year as the Chargers look to move past last year's campaign that saw UAH go winless in conference action. The coaches of the GSC selected the Chargers to finish fourth, while Shorter was not included in the preseason poll as the Hawks are not eligible for postseason play for one more season as they work towards acquiring full-time membership in the conference.
Â
LOCAL CONNECTION: Juniors Kyle Simmons and Mitch Wilson have teamed up on goals several times during their career, and they did so again on Sunday night when Simmons scored the first strike of the night against Lincoln Memorial off an assist from Wilson. Simmons starred at Madison County High School during his prep career, while Wilson showcased his talents at Grissom High School.
Â
FREE SOCCER: With the two overtime games to start the season, UAH has now played three consecutive contests that have lasted more than 90 minutes dating back to the final game of the 2012 campaign.
Â
IN THE RANKINGS: With the unbeaten start, UAH appeared in the first edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Men's South Region Poll, checking in at No. 7. Two other GSC schools appear in the rankings as Union is tied for fifth and West Florida is tied for eighth.
About the Opponents
ABOUT THE HAWKS: Shorter visits Huntsville with an 0-1-1 record after losing 4-1 to defending national champion Lynn and tying 3-3 with King (Tenn.). The four goals for Shorter on the season have been scored by four different players, and Diego Gonzalez joins them in a tie for the team lead in points with two as he has picked up two helpers on the year.
Â
ABOUT THE FALCONS: Montevallo will come to town with a mark of 2-1 with wins over Talladega and Eckerd and a 1-0 loss to West Alabama its last time out. Jeffrey Hessenberger sits on top of Montevallo's offensive ledger with a pair of goals and an assist for five points, and Brendan Ledgeway has logged all of the team's minutes in goal while posting the 2-1 record.
Series History
SHORTER: The series is tilted heavily towards Friday's guests as the Hawks have won four of the five meetings including a 5-1 decision in Rome and a 2-1 triumph in Huntsville. At Rome, Kyle Simmons scored the team's lone goal.
Â
MONTEVALLO: The Falcons have won 11 games while UAH has taken nine matches in the all-time series with the Chargers falling on the road a season ago. Prior to that, UAH had won two consecutive contests including a 3-1 win in 2011 when the Falcons were ranked nationally.
