Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to host West Georgia on Friday afternoon, falling in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams. UAH slips to 0-1-2 (0-1-0 GSC) with the setback, while West Georgia improves to 1-3-0 (1-0-0 GSC).
It was a goal in the next-to-last minute of the opening half off the foot of Caroline Woodhead that ended up being the only score in the game as West Georgia was able to fend off a ferocious second-half attack by UAH.
The visitors fired 11 shots in the final 45 minutes – including seven that reached the target – and took eight corners as the Blue and White attempted to earn the equalizer. Part of that strong effort included a penalty kick try in the 53rd minute that West Georgia keeper Mary Laza was able to turn aside in helping her team record its first victory of the season.
In addition to not being able to convert the penalty, the Lady Chargers also had a pair of attempts that hit the crossbar in the second half.
For the contest, UAH held a 15-9 advantage in shots and an 8-2 lead in shots on goal as
Iris Gunnarsdottir was not challenged much in the affair in goal for the Lady Chargers.
Niina Jetsu led the side with four shots, including three that were on frame.
UAH will look to rebound on Sunday as the Lady Chargers continue conference play at Valdosta State, the middle game of a three-game-in-six-days stint for the team. Kick-off is slated for noon CDT.
