Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A late penalty-kick goal in regulation by the visitors produced a 2-2 draw between The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team and Montevallo on Tuesday night at Charger Park. The tie moves the Lady Chargers to 0-2-3 on the year, while the Falcons go to 0-2-2.
In the 85th minute and with the home side holding a 2-1 advantage, UAH was whistled for a foul just inside the box, and Jade Pennock stepped up and buried the PK to make it 2-2. Neither team was then able to generate much in the overtime periods, with the Lady Chargers showing strong resiliency despite playing their third contest in a five-day period.
UAH grabbed the first lead of the game, doing so in quick fashion as reigning Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year
Sydnie Fiocca opened the scoring in the eighth minute.
A long pass from keeper
Iris Gunnarsdottir put Fiocca alone in front, and the St. Catharine's, Ontario, native went one-on-one with the Falcon goalie before finishing on the left side. The sophomore's first strike of the season ended a long scoreless drought for the Lady Chargers that dated back to the team's first game of the season.
The assist for Gunnarsdottir marked the second of her career, and she also was strong in net on the night as she made 11 stops.
UAH would not have another long drought, however, as Montevallo scored in the 24th minute to level the contest, but the Lady Chargers answered right back in the 31st.
Jill Young possessed the ball on the far right side of the field and booted it towards the goal, and what appeared to be intended as a cross then turned into something much more as the ball sailed towards goal, bounced behind the keeper and into the net to produce the sophomore defender's first goal of her collegiate career.
The effects of the long stretch of games for UAH then would begin to show as Montevallo held a 17-6 advantage in shots in the second half en route to owning a 33-10 lead on the night including a 13-5 edge in attempts that were on frame.
Corners also leaned in favor of the Falcons by a 6-2 margin.
UAH will now return to road play as it continues GSC action at North Alabama on Sunday. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m.
