Box Score ROME, Ga. – Using three second-half goals to complete a comeback, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team defeated host Shorter on Wednesday night in GSC action. The victory moves UAH to 1-3-3 (1-3-0 GSC), while the Hawks slip to 2-5-0 (0-1-0 GSC).
After the home side scored just under four minutes into the second half to produce a 2-0 advantage, the Lady Chargers would respond in a big way.
Just five minutes later in the 54th, freshman
Maddie Maurice found
Moriah Bayse near the penalty spot, and Bayse rocketed it into the back of the net to cut the UAH deficit in half, and Maurice then proceeded to level the affair with her first collegiate goal when she found herself about 25 yards out, made a strong run past several Shorter defenders, and finished to make it 2-2.
With the team squarely back in the contest, the Lady Chargers then received a fortuitous break in the 74th minute when a free kick from more than 50 yards out by
Marie Blunt sailed towards the box and deflected off a Shorter defender in front and into the net to push the Lady Chargers in front 3-2.
The visiting side then held off Shorter's attempt to find the equalizer in the closing minutes.
Iris Gunnarsdottir was strong in goal for the Blue and White in the victory as she notched six stops – including one on a penalty kick attempt in the opening 45 minutes – to move within three of establishing a new program record for saves in a career.
The Hawks outshot UAH on the night by a 14-9 clip including an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal, but corners on the evening were even at 3-3.
UAH will look to build upon the victory on Saturday when it returns home to take on Tennessee Temple. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Charger Park.
