Chargers Earn GSC Win, Defeat Delta State 1-0

Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – With head coach Matt Watts returning to the place at which he most recently coached, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team travelled to Delta State on Friday and picked up a 1-0 victory at Delta Field. The Chargers improve to 3-3-1 (1-3-0 GSC), while the Statesmen drop to 0-6-1 (0-4-1 GSC).

The triumph marks the first conference victory for UAH since a 1-0 victory over West Florida on Oct. 30, 2011.

The Chargers applied strong pressure from the start of the contest, and it resulted in the game's lone goal in the 22nd minute as after having a shot blocked and a header attempt go wide in the 20th minute, Kyle Simmons put the visiting side on top with the early goal.

The score is the fifth of the season for Simmons, and the junior from Huntsville now sits in a tie for the GSC lead in goals on the season pending other results from around the league on Friday.

Though the Chargers would be unable to put another in, the team finished the contest with a strong 16-7 advantage in shots, and UAH took six corners on the afternoon compared to just three for Delta State. Simmons led the team with four shots while both Mitch Wilson and Anthony Benitez recorded three for the game.

Will Carpenter faced just three shots that were on frame, and the freshman keeper turned away each to earn his second shutout of the season.

UAH will conclude the four-game conference road trip on Sunday when the Chargers take on Christian Brothers in Memphis. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
