HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Five different players scored, a 14-year-old record was matched, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory over visiting Tennessee Temple in front of a large Charger Park crowd on Saturday night. The win improves the Lady Chargers to 2-3-3 on the year, while TTU slips to 2-8.
The home side dominated the affair, outshooting the opposition by a 23-3 margin and taking seven corner kicks to just two for the Crusaders.
That strong effort first resulted in a score in the 27th minute when
Shayla McWhorter setup
Klaire Phillips who headed it into the back of the net for the freshman's first collegiate score, and Phillips would pick up the assist on the team's second goal of the night in the 40th when
Maddie Maurice notched her second goal in as many games.
Phillips was one of three Lady Chargers to finish the night with three points as after
Melody Dodd scored off a Jill Young helper in the 60th minute, the duo of
Alex Petermann and
Summer Mooney wrapped up the scoring for the Blue and White.
Mooney assisted on Petermann's tally in the 83rd minute, and the favor was returned in the 89th when Petermann slid it over to her right to Mooney who was able to deposit it into a wide-open net. The two goals represent the first of the season for both players.
Though she was hardly challenged on the night, senior goalkeeper
Iris Gunnarsdottir made two stops on the night to own 274 for her career – tying Laura Jackson for the most saves in a UAH keeper's career as Jackson established the mark from 1997-99.
Of the 23 shots the Lady Chargers had on the evening, 14 were on goal with Petermann and
Niina Jetsu both firing three on frame.
UAH will now take its two-game winning streak back on the road when it travels to No. 7 North Georgia. Kick-off is slated for 5 p.m. in Dahlonega, Ga.
