Season Opener for Chargers Ends in 1-1 Tie

Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team opened the 2013 campaign on Thursday night, earning a 1-1 draw on the road at Trevecca Nazarene. Both the Chargers and the Trojans begin the season at 0-0-1.

Both teams had terrific opportunities to break the deadlock late in the contest with a pair of UAH freshman playing key roles in both.

With just under three minutes remaining in the contest, Hermann Bjornsson found himself alone in front, but his try was snagged out of the air by the Trevecca keeper Braydon Brown. With that scoring chance thwarted, the contest went into overtime where freshman keeper Will Carpenter would make a strong stop in his collegiate debut.

In the final minute of the first overtime period, Richie Reichenberger fired a shot at Carpenter who dove to his left to keep the ball out of his goal and keep the game tied. The stop was the fifth of the night for the Orange Beach, Ala., native.

All of the scoring was in the first half as the Chargers were trailing 1-0 after the hosts got on the board with a strike in the 14th minute off the foot of Connor Inman.

UAH then leveled the match just over 10 minutes later in the 24th. Transfer Yuri Ivanov recorded his first goal in the Blue and White as his fellow newcomer Bjornsson found Ivanov on the right side of the box, and Ivanov proceeded to rocket it into the back of the net for the equalizer.

For the contest, the Trojans outshot UAH 15-12, and the hosts also held a 6-5 advantage in shots that reached the target. The Chargers controlled play through much of the contest despite the result, and it showed as the Blue and White held a strong 8-3 advantage in corners on the night.

The eight corners matched the team's highest output from a year ago.

The Chargers will return to the pitch on Sunday when the team opens the 2013 home slate with a visit from Lincoln Memorial. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Charger Park as the squad will play the first-ever night game on campus.
