Lady Chargers Tie Carson-Newman 1-1 to Start Year

Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team began the 2013 campaign with a road match on Friday afternoon, playing to a 1-1 draw with Carson-Newman. The Lady Chargers and the Eagles both start at 0-0-1 with the tie.

Continuing a trend from a season ago when the team performed the feat six times, the visitors took control of the contest early by scoring in the first 10 minutes of the game. In just the fifth minute of the match, freshman Melody Dodd notched her first collegiate goal in her debut game as she found herself able to finish off a strong corner kick off the foot of fellow freshman Alexandra Klein.

The score would remain tilted in UAH's favor until Carson-Newman's Mikayla Gregg put one past Iris Gunnarsdottir in the 52nd minute to level the affair at 1-1. Gunnarsdottir – who has set the UAH record for saves in a season in consecutive years entering the 2013 season – finished the night with five stops.

The Lady Chargers were able to outshoot the hosts by a 20-17 margin – including a strong 14-6 edge in shots that reached the target – but UAH was unable to find the back of Katy Hill's net throughout the remainder of regulation and into overtime despite the strong play.

The UAH side did, however, have a pair of terrific chances in the first period of extra time, as newcomers Maddie Maurice and Alex Petermann both had strong attempts thwarted by the C-N keeper while the Lady Chargers applied great pressure to the host's defenders.

Corner kicks on the day were fairly even with the Lady Chargers owning a 4-3 advantage, and UAH was able to successfully defend the last corner of the contest to preserve the tie as the Eagles were unable to produce anything with a chance in the final minute of the second overtime.

UAH will now return home to begin the team's slate at Charger Park as the team will welcome Lincoln Memorial to the Rocket City on Sunday in the first-ever night game on campus. Kick-off is slated for 5 p.m.
