AKRADELPHIA, Ark. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville improved to 14-7 on the year with three-set wins over Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist on Saturday at the Henderson State Invitational. The Chargers did not lose a set this weekend and are now riding a five-game win streak.
UAH opened the day against Henderson State, topping the Reddies in consecutive sets by scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-18.
Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week continued her torrid offensive streak with 16 kills on a .394 swinging percentage in the contest. The native of Birmingham, Alabama also added an assist, five digs and three block assists in the opening match of the day.
Fellow freshman
Kirsten Giles posted 30 assists during the contest, her fifth time this season recording 30 assists or more. Overall, the UAH offense totaled a respectable .295 hitting percentage in the win over Henderson State.
UAH carried its strong play into the final match of the weekend against Ouachita Baptist. The Tigers played closely with the Chargers in the first and second sets as UAH won by margins of 25-21 and 25-22, respectively. The Chargers went on to dominate the third frame by a score of 25-16, which was keyed by a four point run midway through the stanza that included kills by
Haley Snyder and Johnson.
Olivia Bauman,
Jordan Morrison and Snyder had successful offensive performances, as each totaled 10 kills or more. Morrison led the offense with a .500 hitting percentage, with Snyder close behind swinging .381. Senior
Ashton Baker added 40 assists, while junior
Kennedie Lariscy had a team-best 17 digs.
The Chargers return to GSC play this coming week with two home matches against conference opponents. UAH welcomes Christian Brothers on Tuesday at 7 p.m., and will wrap up the week against rival North Alabama next Saturday at 2 p.m.
Tuesday night's contest at Spragins Hall will be "Pink Night" to promote breast cancer awareness. Raffles will be available for the match, with all proceeds going towards the Huntsville Hospital Breast Cancer Patient Assistance Fund.
